Powwows, Eagle Feathers, and Intertribals
At a Native American Powwow, people come together to share in song and dance. Veterans Powwows are especially for Veterans. There are Veterans Powwows all over North America. Many Native American Communities organize them. Even the Marinecorps is now organizing Powwows for their veterans. There are smaller Powwows (and a small Powwow is still not so small!) and larger contest type Powwows. The traditions at each vary, and it is wise to know what the traditions are. Some are very strict, others are less strict. For example, at some Powwows you cannot film or photograph certain dances, like the Grand Entry. There are yet others who say that the traditions should be shared, because they were originally kept secret due to prosicution by the United States Government. In either case, it is up to each Tribe to determine their rules for their Powwow. There are many traditions for warriors, today's soldiers. An Eagle Feather is given to a warrior on his way to service, his duty is to return it to the Elder that gave it to him. Sweat lodges are places for healing together. Julie Yaekel Black Elk organizes Sweat Lodges for veterans returning from war, and for their family members. |
